The Woodland Garden gains its inspiration from the dappled sunlight created by a grove of trees. It is generally part sun and part shade. Mulch created from fallen leaves and additional moisture provide the growing medium for a variety of shade-loving perennials. Pathways or trails accented by boulder outcrops lead us through the garden where we can view many of the plants that thrive under these conditions. The beauty of the woodland garden is in the composition of foliage and flowers. Small trees such as Redbud, Maple, and Dogwood thrive under the protective canopy of larger trees. Deciduous and evergreen shrubs like Azalea, Camellia and Hydrangea combine with under story plantings such as Ferns, Grasses, Cranesbill, Iris, and Bellflower can all be found in the woodland garden. Architectural elements such as council circles, sod roof follies, stone stairways and bridges add permanence and lend perennial structure to the woodland picture.
