Stairways provide a safe way to navigate steep slopes, and connect the various levels of a terraced area. Even a small change in elevation may be accentuated by the addition of a few steps.

Stairways may involve any degree of formality, and may be created from a variety of materials, including brick, tile, concrete, stone, railroad ties, or a combination of the above.
