The California garden is born out of our sun-bathed climate and a respect for the natural environment. The expressions are indigenous, free from the borrowed styles of Europe and Asia. The use of nativeand drought tolerant plants such as California Lilac, Manzanita, Pacific Iris, Matilijn Poppy, Rock Rose, Westringia, Acacia, Coffeeberry along with regional building materials and techniques, define the spirit of this style. The Arts and Crafts movement persuaded designers to create architectural expressions that respected the natural environment. This movement has led us to our present ideals of sustainability. Today, "Green Building" continues the same sensibility of conservation and is changing the way we live and interact in our homes and gardens. Respecting the natural resources and the idea of sustainable progression best captures the spirit of the Californian garden. Click on thumbnails to view larger Images |
