Plantings
Landscapes by davids

Plantings are the most significant element in the composition of a garden, adding substance and life to the underlying structure while reinforcing the particular style and character of the landscape. Plants soften lines, fill space with color, texture, fragrance, and provide spatial definition. Trees form overhead canopies, shrubs make walls and groundcovers create carpets. Together plants form green walls, expansive meadows and dense forests. Because they are alive, plantings are constantly changing and evolving – in distinct contrast to the static architectural structures they compliment.

Plants are incredibly diverse, thriving in a range of ecosystems from the desert to the rainforest. Specific plant choices express regional character, reinforcing the intended garden style and the style of the surrounding architecture. Plantings can be soft and meandering, or echo architecture with straight, direct lines. The method of grouping plants in naturalistic or formal planting designs also reinforces the overall style of the garden.

Beyond defining the setting, plants also serve structural and environmental ends. Plants can knit soil together, wick water out of wet areas, provide shelter from the sun and wind, and clean our air.
